The Rancho Dantas coffee farm has been in the custody of the Soares Paula family for five generations at rural area of Brejetuba, in the mountains of Espirito Santo. “We grew up seeing my parents dealing with coffee and I knew the difficulties of the time and followed the evolution and improvement of coffee quality. We have refined our coffee processing practices, which have earned our product ‘first prize’ in the ‘Brejetuba Sustainable Coffee Awards’ with a score of 93 points in 2015. The grower, Edval Soares Paula, has an area of 10 hectares and an average annual production of 450 bags. Coffee is the main source of income of the family.

A major challenge in the establishment of the process was the lack of agricultural equipment for refined processing such as pulpers, washing machines, and greenhouses. “From outdated equipment and resources, we are now producing high-quality coffee with greater consideration for agricultural and environmental sustainability,” Mr. Edval said. Rancho Dantas processes include selective harvesting, hulling coffee the same day as harvest and drying in a clean greenhouse.
