Despite being their family’s fourth generation in coffee farming, Marcelo and Paula have chosen not to cultivate the same land as their parents. They embarked on a long search to find the perfect plot of land that would provide ideal conditions for growing coffee. Tres Meninas Farm is located in Cerrado Mineiro, a Denomination of Origin for coffee recognised for its origin, traceability, individuality of its producers and high quality of the beans. The region was carefully selected for its optimal topography, uniform geography, altitude, and micro-climate. In 2016, Três Meninas (Three Girls) Farm was established on 54 hectares among coffee trees, nature, work and happiness. One farm, countless stories and three girls: Paula, Malu and Fefe, who together with Marcelo are sowing the fruits of a new generation. The family works closely with the Federal University of Uberlândia, forging partnerships to implement water-saving irrigation techniques to synchronise flowering, and enhance crop quality. Moreover, the farm has made significant investments in drying raised beds, fermentation studies, and post-harvest infrastructure to ensure the production of exceptional and distinct coffee. Sustainability is deeply ingrained in their values, evident in every aspect of the farm’s operations. They hold UTZ and Rainforest certifications, emphasising their commitment to responsible practices. The family also prioritises preventive management, employing professional technical monitoring, utilising green and biological fertilisers, incorporating organic fertilisers, yeasts, bacteria, fungi, and insects. Furthermore, they have achieved a 50% reduction in herbicide use and have set a goal to eliminate herbicides entirely across the entire farm. Since 2016, various actions have been implemented at Tres Meninas Farm, such as the use of biological fertilisers, manure, and reforestation. In 2019, Tres Meninas Farm achieved a negative carbon balance, sequestering more carbon than was emitted, with over 5 tons of carbon per hectare. Based on data from Imaflora (2020), Tres Meninas Farm ranks among the top 5% most sustainable coffee farms worldwide. This is not just a hypothesis but an important fact-based indicator. As of today (2021), this number has continued to grow due to the farm’s intensified daily cultural practices. It is worth noting that their remarkable carbon results are directly attributed to the farm’s adoption of regenerative agriculture practices, which cover 100% of their land. These regenerative practices have been firmly established and operational for several years. Três Meninas Farm has made significant strides in environmental conservation by planting over 3,000 trees. In this exciting new phase of their project, they are committed to expanding their tree planting efforts while incorporating various cover crops. Extensive research indicates that these sustainable practices offer numerous benefits, such as moderating temperatures and creating a favorable microclimate. Moreover, they facilitate nutrient cycling and provide a safe haven for diverse micro and macrofauna.

One notable advantage of this approach is the natural windbreak it creates, effectively reducing the need for excessive irrigation. As a result, water conservation becomes a priority within their system. By implementing a comprehensive range of regenerative practices and enhancing carbon sequestration, Três Meninas Farm strives to foster a resilient environment that has a positive impact on the surrounding landscape. By harmonising these ecological efforts, Três Meninas Farm also aims to achieve improved consistency in the maturation of their crops. This dedication to uniformity directly translates into a superior quality coffee beverage for consumers to enjoy. Tres Meninas cultivates the Topazio variety, a 100% Arabica coffee that produces a full-bodied cup, sweet notes, citric acidity and lingering aftertaste. The deep respect the family has for their land and its resources firmly set it apart from most of other coffee farms. “At our farm, we approach coffee cultivation with a deep sense of care for both the beans and the people involved. Our management tools and attitudes are carefully crafted to strike a harmonious balance between productivity, employee well-being, process excellence, and a strong commitment to the production chain. Every day, we strive to blend scientific knowledge, innovative efforts, and the rich coffee-growing experience of Minas Gerais to create exceptional and distinctive coffee offerings. By aligning our practices with cutting-edge research and collaborating with renowned institutions, we are dedicated to producing exceptional coffee that embodies our commitment to sustainability, quality, and the local community” Says Marcelo.
